Asia shrimp production is suffering

Unfortunately every now and then, a disease heavily affects the shrimp production in Asia.

This is happening again now. It started in Ecuador, but it has now also hit Vietnam and India. Almost 70% of total shrimp is destroyed. The problems are mainly vibrio parahaemolyticus and staphylococcus aureus. This has consequently resulted in much higher raw material prices. Especially larger sizes are affected, sometimes resulting in an increase of even 50% or more.

Another challenge producers in Vietnam, for example are facing is the lack of or difficulty to get enough personnel. Specially during the in Asia very popular Durian season, lots of workers get paid much more in that industry. Producers are investing more and more in technology to be less dependent on their workforce.
